Should I tell my recruiter I just got a job offer from another company?
Perhaps.Informing the recruiter or hiring manager that you have another job offer in hand (not the promise of a job offer, nor a pending job offer—a REAL, PAPER/ELECTRONIC job offer, with a salary, job title, start-date, etc.) can both work to your advantage, or be a detriment.If you are in the early stages of your interviews with Employer 2, informing them that you have another job offer may result in them fast-tracking your candidacy, and getting an interview scheduled more swiftly than if you didn’t have another offer. Or… they may decide to take a pass on your candidacy all-together, knowing that they can’t act fast enough to compete with your existing offer.If you are in the latter stages of an interview, I’d suggest that it IS to your advantage to let them know of a competing offer.By letting them know of competitive interest in your skills, you again may force their hand toward a decision—and it brings you some leverage with regard to salary negotiations. (Never tell any employer what the other employer offered you, compensation-wise, though. Let them guess, and hope they guess high. If not—take the other offer!)You also lend a greater psychological appeal to your candidacy, since having an offer validates your skills (another employer apparently vetted you and found you desirable, too).Be careful what you share with Employer 2, though. It’s important to demonstrate a significant level of interest in the existing offer—while balancing that with significant interest in Employer 2’s job prospects. Also, be sure that you don’t string Employer 1 along too far. Holding on to an offer longer than a couple of days is concerning and suspicious, and may result in that offer being retracted, due to lack of decisiveness on your part!
