Yes you can break RD at any time you want. If you book RD online than any time by logging into www.hdfcbank.com and break the same. If you wish you can give written request or filling up form at Bank and Bank will break the RD.Yes, you will be penalised for premature withdrawal. But it will be imposed on your interest not on principal amount. Suppose you have start RD for 2 years with interest rate is 10%. Now you want to break the RD after 6 months. Assuming the Interest rate is 9% for six month than you will receive 8.5% (if the premature penalty of the bank is 0.5%). Simply you can deduct the penalty rate from the prevailing rate till the amount is deposited.
