What State Are Pit Bulls Banned

What state are Pit Bulls banned?

I think that there should be some kind of breeding ban on known aggressive dogs & the breeding left up to people who know how to breed dogs. Genetic testing, pre breeding tests specific to the breeds & selective breeding.

The majority of BYBers don't really know enough to be breeding dogs & this shows in the poor quality of many aggressive breeds available today. Some of these breeds do have a well deserved bad rap.

Right now the pit ranks first in human fatalities, followed very closely by the Rott. Many solid reasons behind the ban.

Are there any states the Pit Bulls are banned?

If you are referring to America, then NO, no states as a whole ban pit bulls. Many major cities do, unfortunately, including my own state capital of Denver, Colorado (run by a bunch of yuppy know-it-alls if you ask me. Such a shame for such a pet-friendly state). In 2004-2005 Governor Bill Owens over turned the ban, saying it was unfair and unjust, however, the City turned over his turning over of their ban, saying it was unconstitutional for the State to limit what the City could or could not ban. HMMM, unconstitutional for the state to ban something from the city, but the city can ban something stupid and completely ignorant from the people. Makes you wonder about how some things work, doesn't it?

EDIT: Michigan does NOT ban pit bulls. The ban was proposed in December of 2008 after a boy was attacked by two in April of 2001 I believe it was, but it was not passed. No state out right bans them. Ohio is the closest with very strict state wide laws regarding pit bulls.

I would also like to point out a statement made by the lawyer trying to pass this ban in michigan (His name is Reed)

"Every time you pick up the newspaper, you are hearing about one of these
vicious animals attacking young children," said Reed, a former pit bull
owner himself. He decided he no longer wanted to own one when one of his pit
bulls attacked the other one. "They are the only breed that has a mechanism where they can lock their
jaws," Reed said. "These dogs are kind of like dangerous weapons."

It is ANATOMICALLY IMPOSSIBLE for ANY dog to lock their jaw. ANATOMICALLY IMPOSSIBLE!! They would have to have a seperate bone lodge into place. Find me a pit bull skull and show me how this is possible. An idiotic lawyer who backs his claims up with false and idiotic facts has no right in the court room at all.

They’re banned in many Countries and even some states in the USA has laws against them. Here is a list -ArgentinaParts of AustraliaParts of AustriaBavariaBelarusParts of BelgiumBermudaParts of BrazilParts of ChinaParts of CanadaDenmarkEcuadorFinlandFranceGermany – Pit bull type dogs are banned in 15/16 German provinces.GuyanaIrelandIsraelItalyParts of JapanLatviaLiechtensteinMalaysiaMaltaNew Zealand – Not only are pit bulls banned, but pit bulls and other breeds deemed “menacing” by the Government are not considered for adoption and are euthanised as a matter of course.NorwayPolandPortugalPuerto RicoRomaniaRussiaSingaporeSpainSwitzerlandTurkeyThe UEAUkraineUnited KingdomVenezuelaJust to add this - Pitbulls are NOT a bad breed. It all has to do with the genetics of the parents being bred, socialization, and training. Genetics play a role in all of us. Some people because of genes get a lot of things like obesity, anxiety, bipolar disorder, cancer etc. Genetics are very important when obtaining a dog. Socialization is needed for all of us - especially dogs. If a dog is not socialized from a young age they will have issues with other dogs, animals, and even humans. They will act out aggressively or be super scared. Please always get your animals from a reputable breeder or rescue. Last but not least, Training! Training is an important daily activity that needs to happen for the rest of their existence. Training provides confidence, activity so their minds are NOT bored, and a path to feel like they’re part of a back - like we’re they’re alpha. A lot of people have issues when their dog’s rule them. In order to have most control over a dog is for you to take charge and be their alpha. Now do remember that they’re living things and we cannot always control them. Just like us, they have a mouth they can bite.

Yes, they are. But I must specify that the breed banned in the UK is the American Pit Bull Terrier (maybe the American Staffordshire Terrier as well), because while labeled as a “pit bull” in North America, the Staffordshire Bull Terrier isn’t banned in the UK.For more information:Dangerous Dogs Act 1991 - WikipediaControlling your dog in public

What cities are pit bulls banned?

CollegeGRAD and jasonT........... I wanted to get you first because your both ignorant and boy i just love correcting ignorance if given the chance. Pit bulls were bred to fight that would be correct, jason, if they attack another dog that does not mean they will attack a child or a grown person. In fact , without going into details, the strain of the APBT that is famous as being the fighting dog is the dog MOST LIKELY NOT TO BITE A PERSON OR CHILD for very good reason ,but i wont even try to explain to your feeble little mind. CollegeGRAD, you should have kept your comment to yourself. ITs extremely apparent you just needed 2 points because you dont have a clue what your talking about. Now for the real question, what would i do if my city banned my dogs? Nothing, i dont live in a city.........BUT if i did live in a city and it was ever even proposed to introduce BSL........you better believe me and my dogs would be on the front steps of city hall ASAP. If we let the government run over the pit bull, the morons that got this all started are just going to pick another dog breed to ruin...........and on and on until there are no dogs left..........then what? cats? Heres something i think legislature should consider- How about instead of needing a permit to own a pit bull ...........you still have to have a permit, but you have to go through testing or criteria must be met in order for you to own one. Say, your jeans must be above your waist first of all, maybe you cant have any felonies in the past 3 yrs and you must give the dog a good life . Maybe the government could even send out workers to inspect like they do with the department of child services. You people just dont realize that telling us what kind of a dog we can own is just one of the many steps that will eventually turn this country into a totalotarion nazi wanna be bumble ****. Of which is not too far from RIGHT NOW.

IN WHAT STATES are Pit Bull breeds banned?

I strongly disagree. That's like saying save the lions. It's the owners irresponsibilites, not the animal. And to the poster that says they've never seen an aggressive pit bull? What planet are you living on? wow. I used to have an open mind about pit bulls.. saying oh it's just the owners. Well unfortunately I've now personally experienced 100% negative regarding pit bulls.. and only about 5% negative regarding any other breeds.. and that 5% is like a bee sting vs. an arm being ripped off. Every time I go to the dog park.. I see a pit bull picking a fight with other dogs.. trying to be top on the totem poll. We don't go to the dog parks anymore because of this fear of our dog becoming the next pit bulls Sunday brunch. It's sad. We see no other dogs having issues at the parks. A few little upsets but nothing like these pit bulls. Most pit bulls that attack will lock down not let go and thrash about.. by nature - by blood - not because of their owner's training habits. And many have killed. I've met pit bulls on dog walks.. No other dog owners do I see holding their dogs back 20 feet away in hopes that that will calm them down from trying to get to our dog. And not ONE pit bull were we able to walk by without it aggressively advancing towards our dog. All breeds have specific personalities and temperments. A majority of pit bull owners have them for one reason.. and it's not because they're cute and cuddly. That's the problem. And until you good people outweigh the bad, I think a ban is the only safe thing. At least in the city where I live. Maybe there are cities where the pit bulls are super nice and wonderful dogs. But I haven't seen one of them here.. so I think they should be banned where I live - I'd rather be approached by a wolf than a pit bull! All dogs can kill. My wife can kill too. But it's not in her blood. If your city bans pit bulls, protest and live somewhere else.

TL;DR: Nothing big will happen, fees and restrictions to owning put bulls will be impleneted, the reduction in ownership of pit bulls will make the (now reduced) violence a non-issue.This started as a response to Zoletta Cherrystone, but became long so it's a separate answer.First off, one has to admit that different breeds of animal have different levels of predisposition to aggressonFor canine's, I imagine it's a continuum: on one end you have the most docile, and on the other end you have, let's say, a wolf. Certainly the role of the dog owner plays a big part, but assuming the quality of the owner is constant, the canines on the aggressive end of the spectrum are going to be more likely to have an "aggression incident".So what do we do?We could ban ownership of pit bulls, but that doesn't seem palatable. We could restrict them to being owned by professionals, but again, that seems extreme. We could require every dog owner to take a test, and the results of that test would determine what sort of dog you are allowed to own (again, referencing the "aggression continuum). That smacks of big government and can't be implemented.Indeed, what is going to happen is that nothing will be done. Eventually victims of pit-bull violence will sue. Some suits will fail, but the ones that succeed will result in incremental advancement of the cause: fees for owning pit bulls, caging restrictions, etc. (on a state-by-state basis anyway). This will reduce the amount of people who own pit-bulls, which will result in a corresponding reduction of the amount of people who get attacked by them, brining the assault numbers down to the point where it isn't political.

No, but irresponsible backyard breeders should be banned. It's people that only breed them for profit and/or aggressive traits that are the problem. The first pitbull I ever met was about 23 years ago. She had been abused and hated men. Amazingly enough she ended up loving me after a short period of time. Another time when I was working in swimming pool service I met another one. She was extremely aggressive and would bark and violently bite the gate to the yard when I'd show up for my weekly visit. After many weeks of informing the owners to keep her locked up on service days (and many second trips). I showed up and she was still out in the backyard. I'd had enough and yelled at her to get back. I made my way through the gate and kept telling her to back off in a firm voice. I closed the gate and sat down on a lounge chair and called her over. Within a couple minutes she was in my lap. I've had countless positive encounters since then. There are very few bad dogs, only bad owners. The entire breed has gotten a bad name because of irresponsible morons who think dogs are a weapon that make them tough. The fact that any idiot can breed animals without regard to health, temperment or welfare is outrageous. A license to breed should be a requirement in America. Then maybe we could curb not only backyard breeders, but also shelters full of unwanted animals.

What's all this about banning pit bulls?

This is an old controversy and/or rumor that has been going on at least since the 1980s. Some people simply should not be allowed ANY kind of dog, they don't know how to train them, or they purposely train them to be aggressive and they become very dangerous and attack people, including children :-(

There is no nationwide ban on pit bulls, or even statewide bans - - however there ARE cities that do ban them. See the source below for a link where you can check and see if they are banned in your city. Hope this helps :-)
