Are There Any Inexpensive Ways Of Testing For A Brain Tumour

I think I may have a brain tumor but what can I do to convince my mom???

You're very young. It's unlikely, you have a brain tumor. From all the symptoms you describe, it sounds more like stress, anxiety and the natural process of teenagehood. Try to isolate each symptom and correlate with recent actions.

Headaches could be attributed to head colds, sinus problems; flu, lack of sleep; hunger, dieting and stress. Eye spasms might be due to intense repeated work such as computer causing eyestrain. The same goes for tremors of the hands; esp post washing the hands after doing manual labor.

Everybody suffers from forgetfulness and loss of thought with poor concentration skills; and stress. Your digestive problems such as anorexia, or bulimia, might be a contributory factor to your other problems.

For proper diagnosis of brain tumors, you need intensive tests such as Cat Scans, MRI. etc. A medical history is impt. Remember, the onset of symptoms of a brain tumor is..... gradual. It's not a sudden one. In other words, it doesn't happen overnight.

Maybe your mom suspects of your motives: attention getting or sympathy. Sometimes, it might be a question of the "cry wolf." If you have complained before in the past, your credibility might be questionable now.

Signs and symptoms can include the following:

New onset or change in pattern of headaches
Headaches that gradually become more frequent and more severe
Unexplained nausea or vomiting
Vision problems, such as blurred vision, double vision or loss of peripheral vision
Gradual loss of sensation or movement in an arm or a leg
Difficulty with balance
Speech difficulties
Confusion in everyday matters
Personality or behavior changes
Seizures, especially in someone who doesn't have a history of seizures — as with epilepsy, for example
Hearing problems
Hormonal (endocrine) disorders

Again, I reiterate your problems more likely is due to Stress. Observe for any severity. If they gradually increase; you could approach your school nurse, counsellor or teachers to intervene on your behalf to your mom. Can you not confide to a friend or sibling? You have to be properly evaluated by a Dr for proper diagnosis. Your fears might not be unfounded; or without just cause.

Can a blood test at a hospital determine if you have a brain tumor? What does a blood test actually show?

SOME brain tumors can be detected by blood work. A perfect example is a pituitary tumor in that case the easiest way to detect it is with blood workBlood tests don’t look for anatomy they look for alterations in function. So a brain tumor is an abnormality of anatomy (structure) atleast initially. So blood work except for certain types of brain cancer is uselessIF the cancer however alters FUNCTION of the body then by all means blood tests can be essential if not the only option (for cancers of the blood system etc.)Thanks for the A2A and hope the explanation of function vs. structure helpsDr Dave

If you Masturbation al lot will you get brain tumor?

Why are PET scans so expensive?

As others have said, the machine is humungously expensive, and the tracer not cheap.

The infrastructure isn't cheap either. Where we are (a provincial part of the UK) they produce the radioactive tracer off-site, so it has to be shipped to various mobile units; having a short half-life, its activity decays in transit, so the whole dose has to be recalibrated everywhere it's used, which is a skilled procedure.

Furthermore, in relation to your question, bladder cancer isn't well-suited to PET identification. As the tracer is excreted via the urine, the bladder will always be a 'hot-spot' during a PET scan.

As Matt says, there's always the risk of false positives - PET scan picks up tissues that use glucose more vigorously than average, and there are many locations that do this naturally (e.g. liver, tonsils, brain), and many that can do it abnormally for other reasons such as infections, and many (such as very slow-growing cancers, that don't give a PET signal). You can also mess up the scan by muscle movement - I've heard of a case where someone messed up their throat scan by chewing gum.

PET is good in some areas. I had one to attempt to find a primary tumour for a bunch of secondaries of a type known to show up very clearly on PET (it didn't find one, but that was as useful toward a diagnosis - CUP- as finding one).

But for general anatomical studies, PET is actually pretty low-resolution compared to CT or MRI - unless the hospital has the even more expensive dual unit that does a CT location scan integrated with the PET. Coupled with the cost, limitations and radiation dose, that makes it a poor choice for general screening.

Hi,Brain tumors are characterized and graded from 1 to 4 according to their behavior:Benign brain tumors are graded between 1 and 2 as they do not grow fast and are not recurrent after treatment.Malignant brain tumors are graded from 3 -4.
