Is It Worth It To Upgrade From Ddr2 Board To Ddr3

My motherboard supported only ddr2 and I want to upgrade to ddr3 supported one. Is it necessary to upgrade/replace the processor too?

Hey. Thanks for A2A. You may or may not have to switch your processor, it depends on which processor you currently have and which motherboard you're planning to buy. Look on the Internet for the motherboard model you're planning to buy and note the "socket type" down. Then look at your processor and see if it's the same socket type. If yes :You're set. You can upgrade your motherboard without having to change your processor. If no :Look for a DDR3 motherboard that supports your processor's socket type. If you don't want to do it yourself, just comment your current processor, and the budget for your new motherboard, and I'll recommend some options for you.

How to see which ram to upgrade ddr2 or ddr3?

i got motherboard canada ices 003 class b and this is something about my board from belarc : Board: Intel Corporation D102GGC2 AAD42789-201
Serial Number: BTGC61602SV8
Bus Clock: 133 megahertz
BIOS: Intel Corp. GC11020M.86A.1087.2007.0130.1451 01/30/2007

I got 2x1 gb ram and i need to upgrade it so should i buy ddr2 or ddr3?

Is it worth it to upgrade my motherboard for the sake of DDR4 support?

Several things should be considered here:is memory your current bottleneck? DDR4 gives you increases both in memory speed and maximum capacity. So if memory speed/capacity is a bottleneck you might get improved performance from an upgrade. How can you find out if memory is a bottleneck? On windows you can use the resource monitor (resmon.exe) to see in detail how your memory is used. You can see how much memory is available and you can see the number of hard faults (a hard fault is when a program tries to access data that has been stored on the disc to free up memory. That data has to be copied from the disk back to memory before accessing it. So hard faults should be low. If they go up when you start up a program, or go back to a program that you had minimised for a long time that's normal). So if you don't have enough memory check your motherboard and CPU manual to see if you can get more DDR3 memory. To see if your memory speed is a bottleneck just throttle (underclock) your memory speed slightly. If there is no difference in performance at the lower speed, memory speed is not a bottleneck. If it is a bottleneck check if you can overclock it. Are you willing to pay the early adopter price premium on DDR4 memory? If you wait a bit longer DDR4 will become the new standard and DDR4 memory and motherboards will become much cheaper. Are there other changes to motherboards that you should wait for before upgrading? I don't know what changes are currently announced but not available yet.  Just check Intels' announcements for their upcoming CPU generation and see if there's anything you would benefit from.Keep in mind you will need a new processor, too.

What do I have to change if I upgrade from a DDR2 motherboard to a DDR3 one?

It depends. Certainly the RAM. Probably the CPU too. Without more details, like CPU model, I am unable to give you a final answer.AMD socket AM3 CPUs can work on motherboards with DDR2 and/or DDR3. AM3+ work only with DDR3. This means if your CPU is a socket AM3 Athlon II or Phenom II it will work in a DDR3 AM3/AM3+ motherboard. With Intel CPU there is also a small overlapping for socket 775 (Core 2 Duo). Most motherboards had DDR2 controllers, but the newest models had DDR3.If you have to change your CPU too there are other things to consider. AMD used socket AM3/AM3+ for a long time, so basically all AM3/AM3+ CPU work in AM3+ motherboards. With Intel is a different story, as they changed the socket several times for their DDR3 motherboards: socket LGA 1156 for the first generation Core i3–7 CPUs, LGA 1155 for generations 2 and 3, and LGA 1150 for generations 4 and 5.If you give some more details about which CPU you have and what motherboard you intend to buy I might be able to fine tune my answer.

Will DDR3 RAM work on DDR2 motherboard?

If you hammer it in place. Joke aside, no it won’t. DDR2 and DDR3 modules and slots are physically different, there is no way to insert one module in other one’s slot. Unless you use a hammer, then you end up with a broken MB and RAM’s. But there are hybrid motherboards with both slots, so you can choose which RAM you have at hand. Do not try to use both at same time, it can kill your motherboard and/or RAM’s.6 years ago I had such motherboard from Asrock, 2 DDR2 and 2 DDR3 RAM slots. I used 2x2 Gb DDR2, then 2x4 Gb DDR3 with it, never tried to mix them.

Can my DDR2 motherboard support a DDR3 or DDR5 graphics card ?

Yes it should work. No problem. Only thing to check before getting that GPU: Does your motherboard use an AGP slot or a PCI-E ? Most recent GPU's use PCI-E slots, and thats the only thing that would prevent it to work, if it just simply does not fit.

Can I use DDR3 or DDR5 graphics card in a DDR2 motherboard?

Yes you can. The DDR3, DDR5 of a graphics card is the VRAM type/version it has. The DDR2 of the motherboard is the main system memory, i.e. RAM, type, not the graphics card memory type. The only thing you need to check is whether or not your motherboard has a PCI-E slot. If it does, you can run all modern graphics cards on that motherboard. You really need to worry more about whether your power supply has the appropriate connectors and wattage for the GPU you're buying. Most motherboards cone with a PCI-E slot, so motherboard-graphics card compatibility usually isn't a problem.Hope this helps. Cheers!

Will a DDR2 motherboard support a DDR3 Graphics Card?

Yeah sure, why not, as long as you have a PCIe 2.0 X16 slot? But unfortunately your graphics card will be bottlenecked, which means you woudn’t get the performance boost you were looking for in your PC. Basically in means that you woudn’t get all the performance ratings you were looking for.For example, if you are using a 512 MB RAM with a i3 processor (for arguments shake lets take a 3rd gen), you wouldn't really get any performance upgrade than a core 2 duo processor; despite having higher performance). The same thing would happen here. You might use that with a ddr2 supported motherboard, however the memory lanes don’t have enough bandwidth to utilize the entire GPU.So if you are really need to use the graphics you might first try upgrading your Motherboard (but then you need to upgrade pretty much your entire system). So if have the budget in hand go for a full upgrade. Otherwise you may continue using the old system with the new Graphics card, and wait till you hit that budget.

Does Intel DG41RQ motherboard support DDR3 ram?

I have an old PC with Intel DG41RQ motherboard, Dual core 2.5 GHz and 2GB DDR2 ram... I'd like to know if it's possible to use a DDR3 ram in my motherboard? To make myself clear, I don't want to use a DDR2 and a DDR3 ram at the same time. I'd like to replace the DDR2 with a DDR3 RAM if possible.
